Adding atmosphere
This tutorial will show you how to change the atmosphere of your. photographs by a few simple adjustments. My friend Fabrizio Negro was so kind to let me use one of his photographs for this tutorial. :)
Start by opening the picture in photoshop.
Desaturate the picture by going to image - adjustments - desaturate. Then duplicate the layer by hitting ctrl A - ctrl C - ctrl V and put the blending mode to overlay. As you can see, the water will already have more depth and shadows.
Copy the layer and apply the color burn mode this time. Put the opacity of this layer to 40% and the fill to 50%.
Go to image - adjustments - selective colours - neutrals and play around with the tones untill the picture has the colours you like. Finally (optional), go to image - adjustments - curves and experiment with the light until you get the desired effect. After these few adjustments, my final picture looked like this.
